CareerHub Releases Guide to Recruiting and Hiring

by Leading Edge

A new Guide to Recruiting and Hiring has been released by CareerHub, an initiative powered by Leading Edge in partnership with JPRO Network.

Created for hiring managers in the Jewish nonprofit sector—i.e., any professionals in Jewish organizations who hire people—the Guide aims to empower every Jewish nonprofit to utilize an equity lens to find and hire stellar team members so that their organization can succeed.

The team behind CareerHub recognizes that the Jewish nonprofit sector has entered a severe economic crisis, with many organizations implementing layoffs, furloughs, and other workforce cuts. At the same time, as organizations scramble to adapt to new realities, many Jewish organizations are still hiring –or will need to do so in the future. Due to the unfortunate widespread job losses, the applicant pool for open positions is large, and thus the task of recruiting and hiring for excellence has never been a more demanding one. The Guide, which was written before the pandemic crisis began, nonetheless remains relevant to many organizations, leaders, and managers.

In the long term, the vitality of the Jewish nonprofit sector depends on organizations taking talent acquisition seriously, even when not hiring for any particular position. The most successful organizations at recruiting are those that build connections with potential talent at all times, while cultivating cultures of equity and inclusion to ensure that their talent recruitment, development, and retention practices won’t lead them to miss out on talent from groups that are marginalized in our community. This holistic approach to talent acquisition requires concrete skills and strategies, and the Guide to Recruiting and Hiring will help hiring managers understand and practice them.

The Guide covers topics including the following (and more):

  • Why and how to build cultures of equity and inclusion
  • Pitfalls and possibilities when defining a role
  • How to create effective job descriptions and announcements
  • How to build a talent pool, when hiring and when not yet hiring
  • Why structure is critical for excellence and equity
  • What kind of interview questions elicit the most valuable responses
  • Why job simulations can be more predictive than interviews
  • How to make reference checks useful

While the Guide to Recruiting and Hiring is written for hiring managers, some job seekers may also benefit from reading the Guide, since it will help them look at the process through the eyes of the recruiters, interviewers, and managers they will encounter during their searches for new positions.
