    Prepare in Advance for a CEO Search

    Leading Action: Boards: Be prepared for a CEO search - whether one is imminent or not.

    Because every CEO inevitably leaves office, all boards should be prepared to execute a CEO search—whether they know one to be imminent or not.

    However, boards are generally ill-prepared for CEO successions. In a 2015 survey of nonprofit boards, researchers at Stanford University found that over two–thirds (69 percent) do not have a succession plan in place.
